Gordon Emmerson, PhD

Originator of Resource Therapy

“Honorary Fellow” at School of Psychology, Victoria University, Melbourne

Biography

Professor Gordon Emmerson, PhD, is a pioneer in the field of “Parts-based, trauma-informed psychotherapy,” who later developed Resource Therapy, a psychotherapy modality practiced by psychologists, physicians, psychiatrists, trauma therapists, counselors, social workers, and coaches in various countries.

During his decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Emmerson devoted himself to Parts-based psychological interventions before developing Resource Therapy and founding Resource Therapy International, an institution officially dedicated to the research and development of Resource Therapy.

Dr. Emmerson was one of the few people to study with Dr. John Watkins and Dr. Helen Watkins, a husband and wife team known for their contributions to psychology, developing Ego State Therapy, a therapy technique that pioneered the Parts-focused approach.

His learning with the Watkinses led him to further develop Ego State Therapy in the world of counseling, eventually evolving into the approach now known as Resource Therapy.
